Club Advert Remake and Evaluation

1) Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
I worked with Natasha and Mia in this practical task. We all managed the task by setting individual roles. By assigning different roles to each one of us this created a more organised approach to the task so that we could complete it to the best standard. Natasha took on the job of filming as she has lots of experience in photography and filming. She handled this task very well and was able to carry out each shot confidently. Mia appeared in the advert, planned out scenes and bought many valuable ideas to our group. She also shared an editing job with us all. I starred in the advert and also acted as a director for each shot recruiting actors and setting out the scenes as well as organising the videos and doing the basic editing which Mia and Natasha took over to properly edit to the actual video. We were all happy with each others input and effort and worked well together.

2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
To plan our sequence we screenshot every single shot and laid them out like a storyboard, writing about the camera shot/angles, setting and the length of each clip.

3) What theorists do you think you could apply to your task?

4) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
We had to take lots of things into account when planning, shooting and editing such as:

  • Audience
  • Camera angles
  • Timing
  • Setting
  • Actors
  • Lighting
  • Accuracy

5) How successful was your sequence? Please identify what worked well and with hindsight
what would you improve/do differently?
Our sequence was overall successful due to good team work and organisation. Also we all had very good work ethics and put lots of effort and time into it.
6) What did others say about your production?
7) What have you learnt from completing this task?
8) Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your future productions?

George Gerbner - Cultivation Theory

George Gerbner: Theorist - Audience

He stated that the longer you are exposed to ideas in the media the more likely the public are to believe it. This is also known as the 'drip drip theory' as it slowly changes peoples views over time. For example according to the theory people who frequently watch television, are more likely to be influenced by the messages from the world of television, the medias influence goes to such an extent that their world view and perceptions start reflecting what they repeatedly see and hear on television. Television is, therefore, considered to contribute independently to the way people perceive social reality.

 Cultivation Theory -
The idea that exposure to repeated patterns of representation over long periods of time can shape and influence the way in which people perceive the world round.

The idea that cultivation reinforces mainstream values (dominant ideologies)

Mise-En-Scene

Mise en-scene from Great Baddow High School Media

Task 1:
1. Goggles, Test tube, Microscope etc.
2. Flowers, Chocolates, Wine
3. Mask, Knives, Gun

Image 1
The emotions portrayed in the left character are feelings of hopelessness and blandness and the person on the right looks concerned. The whole image coveys a serious emotion.
Image 2
The feelings conveyed in this image are feelings of nervousness as they are looking carefully and are crouching down as if hiding and being on watch.
Image 3
This image has a man looking strict and powerful as he has his hands on his hips and his head is held high. He looks proud whereas the soldiers look shy and intimidated as they have there heads lowered.
Image 1
The positioning of the two characters in this image imply that they do not get on well. The distance between them could show some conflict between them and present the plot of the film which could be them two working out there differences or having major conflict with each other.
Image 2
In the center of this image our attention is brought immediately to the ax wedged into the wood. This could tell the viewer that the main theme of the film is death and that there could be blood and gore.

Carys' practice footage

I like the use of different footage in my video as I put in different videos at different points to mix it up. I also used various songs also and faded the audio from James Bond into each other and faded various videos into each other. I sped up some videos to change the tempo and used some footage more than once to create a repetitiveness. To improve this video I would've liked to have added more different effects and possibly sound effects.

Genre Photos

This photo is inspired by the genre of horror. I have edited it to darken it and turn the colours cold bringing a spooky edge. I made sure that the light hit the main focus. I also made sure there were a lot of shadows to emphasize it is a dark film to set fear in the passing viewer.

This photo is inspired by family/kids as it shows a family in a stereo typical scenario. I used a light setting to appeal more to young people and lots of colours.

Semiotics

Semiotics - the study of signs
Also of anything which stands for "something else"
We read images and pictures in an attempt to decode then and make sense of what they mean to us

Denotation- What we see when we look at an image (what it is)

Connotation - What we understand from this image (what is the meaning)

  • The use of red in the title indicates that there will be a lot of blood in the series. This is further emphasised in the subtle hint of blood splatters and drips around the title.
  • The old fashioned font creates an old fashioned feel which brings in the context of the program and is relevant as the characters are thousands of years old (vampires/witches/werewolves)
  • The picture is overall dark however there is a hint of light coming in from the right side which shines on the two main characters. This draws your attention to them first and highlights their importance. He's sat beside a woman which could lead us to think that their is a love interest although, there is another woman behind who is holding a clear gaze at the man portraying her as a distant lover.
  • There is a black raven sitting onto of the far right mans shoulder. The raven represents death which indicates the character could bring a lot of death and is dark and evil. Though the light behind him could mean he has some goodness and light to him.
  • The man on the far left of the table is opposite the other on the end. They are both facing opposite on either end at the head of the table implying that they could have some form of rivalry to be head.
  • Wolves are a symbol of guardianship, ritual, loyalty, and spirit. Wolves have the ability to make quick and firm emotional attachments, and often need to trust their own instincts. This very much could resemble the characters of these people.
  • The candles in the foreground could represent how fragile peoples lives are and that they could be blown out at any minute.

Summer Work - Media representation through images

The fundamental problem with these images and the coverage of these stories is that it’s mired with racist subterfuge. It portrays white people in a friendly way by showing “normal” looking pictures with either family or in a work/ school uniform whilst smiling, however the black people’s images appear to be dulled down mug shots with them looking messy and unhappy and sometimes photos of them can present them as “thuggish”. Though some, (not all) of the crimes committed by white people are a lot more ludicrous in comparison to the crimes committed by black people. Yet the media is deceitfully biased in a low key way that a lot of people would dismiss.. Overall this media coverage is a negative portrayal of black people presenting them as thugs and thieves e.t.c.

Wonder Woman Comic Con Trailer

In the comic con trailer of Wonder Woman there is a closely draw focus towards the dramatic music in the background and the sound effects. So the start of trailer there are slow and quiet sounds which gives access for the music to progress and build up. It develops into quite a haunting sound as it is a single voice singing softly and grandly. It also helps set the film as the music relates to mythical themes and ancient times which is when the film was set. The film has Greek mythology so it seems fitting to have a Godly and haunting voice in the background to help with context.  Then once the film production title is shown the music changes to a darker sounding one with sharp sounds as each clip changes to give an intense effect, however drawing out long silences to give off a more eerie and intriguing  outcome. Though it dramatically changes to a faster and louder tempo to speed the pace of the trailer up and excites the viewer. The music involves loud sounding bangs which sound almost like gun shots meaning the viewer can pick up that there will be fighting and a war. The sounds of swords and metal slashing against each other can also be heard which indicates more fighting. After this escalation the soft singing from the start also plays along with the dramatic music to create an unnerving feeling yet interests the viewer and thrills them to keep watching as it builds up its pace. The timing of the sounds also play a great importance as they make the movie look in sync and it flows better making each movement and clip change sharper than it would be with just continuous music. Loud sounds are heard for certain movements/actions and each clip change. However to emphasize the intenseness the music cuts for a few seconds as Wonder Woman says a line. This is done obviously to add significance to that specific sentence as all that you can hear is her speaking. This then unfolds into the final piece of music which is faster than the rest had been. The sharp sounds grow faster making the viewer feel on edge and awaiting the ending. In the ending it finishes with the actors speech being louder and the music stops subtly which gives emphasis to what they are saying which was humour to make the viewers laugh. Then ends with three loud bangs which sound like strong drums to add to the context of the setting in Greece and gives a sudden ending like a cliff hanger.

Lana Del Rey - Ride

Lana Del Rey's music has been identified generally as baroque pop or dream pop connected to various forms of indie and rock music. Often touching on styles such as hip hop and trap music on recent releases. Baroque pop is a fusion genre that combines classical music with elements of rock music. She takes influences from many artists such as Janis Joplin, Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose, The Eagles, Lou Reed, and Bruce Springsteen; additionally, she cites Hole front woman Courtney Love and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain among her influences.
